live there answered the door this evening i could see tables over turned, mail scattered accross the floor, and their dog's blood still stainnng the floor. it is a painful reminder that thier dog died protecting its owner. the couple tells me one of the men - -hit the girlfriend with their own gaming console. that is when the dog stepped in and was shot trying to protect her. hartman "i spoke with a neighbor who tells me he was on his porch when he heard a loud bang - startled he wasn't sure it was a gunshot until he heard 3 more - - and then the neighbor immediately thought the boyfriend had been shot." the suspects then took off - the neighbor says they were wearing all dark clothing and ski masks. the boyfriend tells me it all happened so fast - he was unable to get a clear look at any of the

ride bus driven by 23-year-old benjamin clague. he is charged with leaving the scene of an accident resulting in death. the accident happening last december on the i- s-u campus. but clague pleading not guilty in court today. one man is killed after overturning his semi truck on the highway. it happened on insterstate 35 near cumming. iowa state patrol says the semi jackknifed and overturned -- shutting down northbound lanes. the victim's names has not been released at this time. authorities arrest a man accused of leading them on a chase while allegedly under the influence. the grant county, wisconsin sheriff's office says 33- year-old joshua scott was standing outside his car on lone road off state highway 80 in smelser township. a deputy stopped to check on scott, when they say he got in the car and sped off. he was later stopped in cuba city

scott is charged with operating while intoxicated and elududng. a fire at a mobile home kills one man and sends his wife to the hospital. cedar rapids fire crews responding to the home in the 37-hundred block of 16th avenue southwest this morning. 72-year-old ronald jacobs' body was found inside the home. his wife --karen was rescued by firefighters and taken to an area hospital for treatment. the fire department says there's extensive fire and smoke damage. but they were able to prevent t from spreading to any nearby homes, a 25-year-old man is killed following a house fire. it happened last night in the 200 block of south highland st. in north english. the second story of the home was engulfed in flames when fire crews responded. here's a look at the aftermath. the homeowner, austin watson, was found dead inside after the fire was put out. the fire remains under investigation. a new bill trying to go through iowa legislation could have a big impact on drivers here in the state.

to talk on your cell phone while driving... right now in iowa - it's illegal to text or send out emails while driving but not talking. some neighboring states --including illinois have made & it illegal -- and iowa could be next. many of people we talked to think this is a good idea. of your concentration away." "ive been in a couple of accidents from using my phone so." many police officers and sheriffs support this bill as well. but the american civil liberties union of iowa is against it. smart ppne apps continue to make the news -- not just for how popular they are -- but because of the dangers they pose. we're also hearing more about so-called "secret apps" -- which can lead kids and teens down a dangerous path. kwwl's ally crutcher has our special report... tweeting, posting, sharing -- mobile apps practically invade our cell phones. but for teens, smart

consequences. a recent murder in virginia highlights just that. "her favorite color as blue. she was a very lovable person." 13-year-old nicole lovell met people on a messaging app called kik. you can stay anonymous, and send photos... it's popular with teens -- and police believe this app might have played a factor in her death. following this case, police departments in eastern iowa say kik is now on their radar. "but there's another monster to tackle -- and that's secret apps. a number of them are out hide, smart hide calculator, hide it pro ... and look at the icons for these... they look "i know a lot of like high schoolers, middle schoolers. my sister is in high school, i wouldn't be surprised if she had one to keep things private or away from my parents." others hear about why kids might be using them... "do things like hide stuff from their parents, hide inappropriate photos and things like that." "you get behind it and there's some nefarious activity going on."

being on their phones, susan "all the time" she's a parent. a parent who stays plugged in... "as soon as i get on an p or susan hadn't heard of frankly, a lot of parents haven't. so we also talked to police. dubuque officers say these apps do what kids want them to do... have the face of a calculator, or other icons like utilities or settings." other cases of secret apps center around hard crime. "a couple of years ago we had they can hide serious business. guns, drugs, nude photos ---and kids haveeccess to the apps. the appeal -- secrecy. the consequences -- dangerous. "if you were to have images of people under the age of 18, and

illegal." for parents -- like susan -- it's an alarming conversation. "it doesn't scare me so much that my kids are doing it, i guess i feel sad that there are a lot of kids ouuthere that are doing that." one: monitor what's downloaded, ask your kids about what's on the phone... police also say -- look at your child's phone differently. it's not a diary. "when you give them access to private place." that's something susan tries to teach her three kids. fighting a false sense of security -- because once something's out there, you can't take it back. when it comes to talking to your teens, some advice that's worked in susan's house. "i would say talk to your kids, talk to your kids... and talk to the act and we're not looking at what happening behind it." we've got you covered -

"to have someone who has experience as a public defender, i couldnt tell you the last time someone who was on the court had that kind of experience" if she is appointed, peters says it wouldn't necessarily have any direct benefits to iowa --

state. lifeguards use a crane to rescue a teenager stuck in the cove. you can see the 19-year-old here california coast after being swt off the reef by a large wave. rescue crews using a crane over he says he was fearing for his life. "oh god, i thought i was gonna drown, like honestly, there was a point where i was hanging on the rock over there, i thought i fortunately he only suffered minor injuries. and emergrgncy crews have been busy in that area -- rescuing more than 12 people this past saturday alone. it's being called the polar vortex challenge -- a restaurant offering free lunch to people who eat their meal outside. customers braving the single digit temperatures at the "hot table" restaurant in springfield, massachusetts. the restaurant has held the event

the hawkeye women on the road tonight --taking on the minnesota golden gophers in williams arena. lisa bluder's hawkeyes topping the gophers in seven of the last nine matchups -- but minnesota coming into tonight in third place in the big ten. megan gustafson crashes the glass here to give the hawkeyes a 10-point lead at 25-15. the big 10's leading scorer, rachel banham, gives minnesota a 69-64 lead with 3- minutes to play....she had another big night.... hawks battle back and takkthe lead when freshman tania davis hits 2 cluth free throws...iowa by 2...74-73. it comes down to two huge plays in the end... ally disterhoft drives to the bucket, off the glass... and the hawkeyes take the lead, 76-75, with just 8 seconds to play. gophers have to go the length of the screen and get open left of the key for this game winning 3-pointer at the buzzer..... banham scores 35 points and had 9 rebounds tonight, as minnesota wins its 4th in a row...78- 76 over the hawkeyes.

ncaa womeans scoring. despite losing at maryland last thursday and narrowly escaping minnesota last night--- the iowa hawkeyes hold on to the number four spot in the latest associated press college basketball poll. villanova is still number one-- followed by kansas, oklahoma.. the hawks are number four and north carolina rounds out the top five maryland falls to number six after their upset loss to wisonsin...michigg state is number eight ----iowa state moves up a spot to number 13 and purdue is number seventeen. indiana is number 22... texas is number 24 while baylor rounds out the top 25. it took 27 points from peter jok and 24 points, 15 rebounds and six blocks from jarred utthoff to lift the hawkeyes to a 75-71 sole possession of first place in the conference. iowa led the entire second half...but couldn't shake a gopher team that is
